The NJ fire escape compliance cycle
Every exterior fire escape in New Jersey runs on the same five-year clock under N.J.A.C. 5:70 and IFC §1104.16.5.1. Here's what that cycle looks like, what gets inspected, and what happens if it lapses.
What gets inspected

Common questions
What is the N.J.A.C. 5:70 fire escape cycle?
New Jersey's Uniform Fire Code (N.J.A.C. 5:70) requires exterior fire escapes to be inspected, tested where applicable, and certified by a licensed engineer or registered design professional at least once every five years.
What is IFC §1104.16.5.1?
IFC §1104.16.5.1 is the International Fire Code section covering fire escape load testing: the structural standard engineers test against when a load test is required as part of certification.
What happens if my certification lapses?
A lapsed Green Card puts a building out of compliance and at risk of a violation notice from the local Fire Prevention Bureau or the DCA. Scheduling your re-inspection before the five-year mark avoids this entirely.
Does EvacuSafe perform the repairs if something fails?
No. We document every deficiency against its code citation so you or your own licensed contractor can address it, then we return to re-inspect and certify. We never perform or arrange repair work ourselves.
